At Kildalkey National School, we encourage children to explore their interests, develop new skills and become active members of the school community. Through a wide range of sporting, creative, scientific and leadership activities, pupils are given opportunities to build confidence, teamwork, creativity and independence in a fun and supportive environment. These experiences play an important role in school life and help every child to learn, grow and thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Sport at Kildalkey National School

GAA

Gaelic games are an important part of school life at Kildalkey N.S. Pupils from all class levels take part in GAA coaching throughout the year, with both a coach from the local club, as well as from our teachers. They develop skills, teamwork and a love of sport. Our school teams regularly participate in Cumann na mBunscol and Peadar Lehane competitions and represent the school with pride, enthusiasm and excellent sportsmanship.

Basketball at Kildalkey National School

Basketball

Basketball is a popular activity in our school. Pupils receive coaching both after school and during school and have the opportunity to participate in local leagues, blitzes and competitions. Basketball helps children develop coordination, confidence, teamwork and communication skills while having fun and staying active.

Athletics at Kildalkey National School

Athletics

Our pupils enjoy a variety of athletics activities throughout the year, including running, jumping and throwing events. Children participate in the annual Father Murphy Athletics Competition and other local sporting events. They regularly visit each other’s classes showing off their medals and trophies.
Also, our annual Active Schools Week and Sports Day are highlights of the school calendar and are enjoyed by pupils and staff alike.

Student Council

The Student Council was formed to enable students to become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management, staff and parents for the benefit of the school and its students.

The Student Council is made up of boys and girls from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes.

Intel Mini Scientist at Kildalkey National School

Intel Mini Scientist

Each year the children in 4th, 5th and 6th class participate in the Intel Mini Scientist Competition.

Taking part in the Intel Mini Scientist involves creating a science and / or technology project which can be based on the Primary Science Curriculum covering topics such as Living Things, Energy and Forces, Materials and Environmental Awareness and Care, or any area which is of interest to the participating students. Our school has strong tradition and track record in this area; we participate in Science STEAM and Maths Week each year.

Music and Drama at Kildalkey National School

Music

Music is a vibrant part of life at Kildalkey N.S. Pupils have opportunities to sing, perform and develop their musical talents throughout the year. Children from 3rd to 6th Class participate in The Big Sing, while all classes enjoy a rich music curriculum. Our choir performs at the Christmas Concert, the First Holy Communion and other celebrations like Grandparents Day. Pupils also learn the tin whistle and regularly perform at school events and celebrations.

Drama at Kildalkey National School

Drama

Drama plays an important role in developing confidence, creativity and communication skills. Pupils from Junior Infants to 2nd Class enjoy drama lessons from a visiting drama teacher, while older pupils participate in a variety of performances throughout the year.

Every year, pupils in 3rd and 5th Class collaborate with the Mullingar Arts Centre to stage a spectacular musical production. Past performances have included Peter Pan, Aladdin and The Jungle Book. These productions provide children with unforgettable experiences and opportunities to develop acting, singing and performance skills.

Dance at Kildalkey National School

Dance

Children from 2nd and 4th Class enjoy dance classes from a visiting dance teacher in the Spring and perform for the school assembly. Some of the children who do Irish dancing prepare showpieces with Corona for the Christmas and Grandparents Day performances. And it is a tradition for 6th class to perform a Graduation Dance at the end of the year.

Art at Kildalkey National School

Art

Creativity is celebrated throughout the school. Pupils explore a wide variety of artistic techniques and media and are encouraged to express themselves through art. Children regularly participate in competitions such as the Let’s Go Art Competition and have opportunities to showcase their work throughout the school in the upstairs Art Gallery as well as in their classrooms. Pupils also design the cover artwork for our annual homework journals.

Technology at Kildalkey National School

Technology

Technology plays an important role in learning at Kildalkey N.S. Pupils from 4th to 6th Class have the opportunity to develop their digital skills through weekly technology lessons with Ann. During these sessions, children explore coding, problem-solving and creativity using programmes such as Scratch, building confidence and preparing for the digital world around them.

Irish Sign Language  at Kildalkey National School

Irish Sign Language (ISL)

We are extremely fortunate to have Debbie as our Irish Sign Language (ISL) teacher. Each year, she generously gives her time to teach ISL to pupils from 2nd to 6th Class. These lessons provide children with a valuable opportunity to learn a new language, develop an understanding of inclusive communication and gain an appreciation for Deaf culture. The children thoroughly enjoy the experience and look forward to their lessons each week.
